.: Langkawi island :.
Thursday, June 28, 2007
Langkawi island is an archipelago of 104 islands lying in the north western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The exact location of these tropical islands is at the site where the Straits of Malacca meets the waters of the Andaman Seas.
The largest of these islands is called Langkawi Island and is bigger than the Penang Island. The other islands in this group are Island of Pregnant Maiden (Pulau Dayang Bunting), Lion Island (Pulau Singa Besar) and Beras Basah Island. The smallest of these islands are atolls roughly the size of an ordinary house!
Langkawi is coined from the Malay words Lang and Kawi. Lang is a brown eagle and Kawi is a local manganese stone. The ancient fishermen must have seen eagles flying clutching the manganese stones! A giant monument of a brown eagle clutching the manganese stone greets all visitors to Langkawi near the Kuah Jetty.
The main tourist attractions of Langkawi Island is its virgin white sandy beaches. The beaches have very gentle continental slope and the water is crystal clear.
This island is unique in the sense that it has so many legendsand myths associated with it.Langkawi Island is therefore also called Pulau Lagenda or Legendary Island.
The most talked about legend is that of Mahsuri who is said to have laid a curse on this island for seven generations.Luckily the period of this curse is over now and Langkawi Island is fast becoming an internationally recognised tourist destination.
The government of Malaysia has declared the entire Langkawi Island as a duty free zone. Hence this island is also termed Duty Free Island. All goods sold in this island are exempted from government tax. Therefore this Legendary Island is a haven for the shoppers. You only need to stay in Langkawi for a minimum of 48 hours to take back home a reasonable amount of tax free goods.

.: PANGKOR ISLAND :.
Friday, June 22, 2007
The main island of Pangkor is mostly populated by fishing villagers who occupy the eastern coastline. The island is famous for its 'ikan bilis' (anchovies) and squids. The real attraction here however are the enchanting beaches on the western coastline Pantai Puteri Dewi, Teluk Belanga, Teluk Nipah and Pasir Bogak. Among these, the quiet coves and untrodden bays at Tortoise Bay, Teluk Nipah and Teluk Chempedak are marvelous for swimming or just basking in the sun, in complete privacy amidst tranquil surroundings.
Off the coast of perak State, north of Selangor , lies a cluster of fabulous islands with unquestionably some of the best coves and beaches on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia. Among them two island predominate in the terms of accessibility, infrastructure and development --the largest island PANGKOR and her little sister Pangkor Laut. Those who not familiar with geographical locations generally confuse the two.
Forty minutes by ferry from Lumut is the most popular island resort of Pulau Pangkor (Pangkor Island) ,welcomes visitors with its serene, golden beaches, crystalline blue water and cool, refreshing breezes. Located about 90km south west of lpoh, it is largely inhabited by fisherfolk. They live in scattered fishing settlements along the coast especially on the eastern side, facing the town of Lumut and Teluk Batik, and their catch comprises mainly cuttlefish and anchovy. The modern facilities make it an ideal gateway. A wide range of sun and sea activities are available such as scuba diving, wind-surfing, fishing, snorkelling.

.: SIBU ISLAND :.
Thursday, June 14, 2007
The Location
The word for island in Malay is Pulau and big is besar so in actual fact Pulau Sibu Besar means Big Sibu Island. Pulau Sibu forms part of the Seribuat chain of islands and lies 12 kilometres off the east coast of the West Peninsular of Malaysia. Tanjong Leman is the boat pick up point for Pulau Sibu and is approximately 2 hours north of Johor Bahru on the Mersing road. The island is shaped like a triangular hour glass, about 6 kilometres long and never more than one kilometre wide it's whole length.
The Island
Most of the island's resorts are situated on the north eastern section of Pulau Sibu, where the golden brown beaches slope away gradually offering ideal bathing conditions. The views from these beaches are of Pulau Tinggi and a string of smaller islets to the south. On a clear day Tioman Island can be seen to the north. The "moonrise" at full moon is so spectacular it is a sight not to be missed.
Prior to the area being designated a Marine Park the line of kelongs which can be seen off the south western coast provided the resorts with a wonderful supply of succulent seafood. However the new regulations now mean they may only be used as platforms for rod and line fishing, popular with many tourists. This section of the coast is sheltered from almost all winds and the sea here is frequently so calm it resembles a lake, allowing mangrove trees to become established along the shore. There is along narrow spit to the south of the village, mostly planted with coconuts, a quiet, breezy place.
The south east coast of Sibu rears up as a series of steep, abrupt cliffs with a rocky shoreline at their base and provides shelter to the village behind. The rocks here, and where exposed at other points on the island, are colourful and contorted. This is due to their composition of layers of volcanic ash run through with later lavas which have combined to produce lacework patterns and reliefs. Low down on headlands near the sea rockpools are frequent and contain miniature worlds populated by colourtul fish, crabs and corals. By Tg Keramat the cliffs contain caves and arches.
There is a large village, Kg Duku, towards the southern tip of Sibu which has a police post, mosque, school, clinic and drinks stall. The entire village is solar powered. The young people of the village now have the opportunity to find employment in the resorts on the island instead of having to find work on the mainland. The older folk continue to earn a living by fishing and follow a more traditional lifestyle.

.: TIOMAN ISLAND :.
Tioman was discovered as a holiday destination quite some time ago. It was the setting for the supposedly mythical magical island of Bali Hai from the 1958 Hollywood movie 'South Pacific'. In the 70s the Time magazine selected Tioman as one of the world's most beautiful islands.Tioman is still rated as one of the world's most beautiful islands. It presents itself as a paradise island in the tropics. But sometimes you have to search for this paradise off the beaten track.
The glassy quality of the waters around Tioman makes snorkeling and scuba diving excellent ways to explore these reef and a popular stretch can be found near Salang. Tulai and the nearby island of Renggis. These spots are easily accessible by canoe or boats which can be hired from Dive Asia, located next to enthusiasts you can spend hours capturing the beauty of the underwater world.
Fishing enthusiasts will have a bountiful time at Tioman Island, with its abundance of fishing areas. Just hire a boat for the day, anchor anywhere along the coast and by dusk you will have a large enough catch for a sumptuous barbecue on the beach and if you prefer something more challenging, try your hand at fishing in the deeper water further off the island's coast.

.: PERHENTIAN ISLAND :.
Wednesday, June 13, 2007
Located at the north-eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. About 21 km off shores the remote town of Kuala Besut. There are two lovely unspoiled island lie amidst exquisitely clear waters. Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian) and Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) comprise the Perhentian Island, aptly named after "henti"(stop) as fishermen from mainland Kelantan and Terengganu have, for centuries, stopped over at the island for a rest or to shelter during a major storm. A rocky virgin jungle provides hour of adventures for trekkers who may chance upon flying fox, long-tailed macaques and monitor lizards, while the underneath marine life shows off a splendid garden of coral.
Perhentian Besar is the bigger one of the two islands (Besar means big in Malay, kecil means small). The accommodation is distributed over three very nice beaches. The Teluk Pauh in the north in front of the Perhentian Island Resort, the main beach with most of the resorts at the west coast and Teluk Dalam on the island's south-east coast.
The best beach on the islands is Teluk Pauh, a beautiful half-moon bay with white powdery sand and water as clear as in a swimming pool. There are good coral around the points on either side. Here you can snorkel with some turtles, black tip reef sharks and hundreds of reef fish.
At the western end of the bay a wooden footbridge leads over a few rocks to Coral View Island Resort's small beach, which consists almost only out of broken up coral pieces. The main beach of the island starts at the resort's western side and stretches over 1 km to Abdul's Chalet only interrupted by some rocky headlands. The beach has fine sand with scattered coral pieces and is bordered by many coconut palms.
Teluk Dalam, on the south of the island is a beautiful wide curved bay with a white fine sandy beach. The water is quite shallow here, the corals mostly destroyed. You can laze away in hammocks under shady casuarinas. Here it is in contrast to the other beaches still quite peaceful.
On Perhentian Kecil you find the only village, Kampung Pasir Hantu, which is a cluster of wooden houses, police station, school, clinic and mosque. Accommodation on Kecil is distributed over more beaches than on Besar. The best and most popular beach of the island is Pasir Panjang (Long Beach) providing dazzling white sandy beach and crystal-clear shallow water. The back of the beach is now almost completely covered with chalets, restaurants and cafes. Better don't expect a peaceful, deserted beach. Also the many arriving and leaving boats are quite noisy.
